Letter to Mr Forrest Local Member for Mallee.
by Rob on Feb.10, 2010, under Site Related News
Well, given I can’t write to Kay Hull any more seems I’m not exactly in the Riverina, I had to look up who the Local Member for Federal Parliment was, which is Mr Forrest, so In regards to the current ‘Censorship’ and ‘Games Classification’ stuff that I have so many concerns over I wrote the following letter.
Dear Mr Forrest,
Until recently I have been in contact with Kay Hull National MP for Riverina as she was my local member however having moved to Sea Lake she is no longer the member. I have been writing to Kay in regards to the current state of Games Classification in Australia and the lack of a R rating and she had been keeping me informed of any changes and or updates in regards to the matter. I have been meaning to bring up with her the Labour parties push for mandatory ‘censorship’ of the internet as well, however given the change in local that is no longer possible, instead I am writing to you about such.
I find it rather distasteful that along with Games, Videos, Books suddenly even my internet is going to be ‘watched’ I’m an Adult I use the net within the legal parameters of the law, but as some one who has worked with ‘Government Filters’ in the past (The Department of Educations in this case on it’s Victorian school network) I happen to know that the content filters are a joke. Rather then allowing some one to freely browse they often mess things up and the current ‘proposal’ on the table by Mr Conroy who has shown he has very little background in the area and appears more for pushing his own views then any one else’s in this matter clearly states that we will have a list controlled by yet another government ran group, that they can ‘refuse classification’ to any website they feel is ‘wrong’ for viewing in Australia and of course this is all in the ‘interests’ of ‘protecting’ our children.
Mr Forrest I’m 28, I’ve grown up with computers, the internet and everything else, Do I know that there are bad people out there on the net? Yes as a Tech I’ve seen what these people can do to computers. What I find a joke is the fact that rather then educating our children like those of my generation where, instead the government thinks that censoring the freedom of speech on the internet is a better Idea.
I ask can Mr Conroy prove that if I do a search for ‘breast’ or something along that lines his filter is not going to block it, If for example I was doing research into breast cancer rates in teenagers aged 14-18 would his filter block it because it contains the words ‘breast’, ‘teenager’ ’14′ etc? From what I’ve seen and read yes, given not even the education departments filters work properly and these are places where you are meant to be able to do ‘research’.
On top of that there is the fact that the list of websites is to be ‘private’ ‘secret’ and yet we are to believe that Mr Conroy, the Labour government or ANY government in the future is going to not abuse the fact they can limit what we see, read, listen, watch, etc? While I am not saying that the current government will or won’t do such things, I ask that the government take a look at the history of every nation in the world, take a big look at what this type of censorship has lead to. In the 1920′s and 30′s did not Germany suddenly ‘censor’ what it believed right and wrong? does not china a country we know to be communist, to be repressive not do this today?
I ask of you to please fight this in Federal Parliament, censorship at it’s core to me personally is wrong in the way that it is being done here, Australia appears to be behind in many respects especially in the Electronic department, not only do we ignore the fact that there are more adults using electronic entertainment but also the fact that Adults have the right to use the internet freely, unless they are breaking the law which is why I last checked we have POLICE. We do not need the government to be doing their job.
Instead lets use the same money being wasted on this idea to educate children properly on the dangers and responsible useage of the internet, let parents start taking responsibility for what their children are doing rather then trying to make us into a country where we are scared to voice our opinions in any way.
Regards
Robert Graham.
Now again these are my views, but honestly lets face it Parents need to start taking responsibility for what their kids do and Mr Conroy needs to stop thinking that we WANT him to baby us, sorry Mr Conroy, your a joke, you don’t understand the Internet, you don’t understand the way current technology works, and worst of all you want to push YOUR views onto me and every one else in Australia. I for one won’t sit by and just let you.

Getting there.

Well slowly getting things done, The heat here is giving the electronics a fit
saddly the air con we have isn’t working the greatest so we are trying to get a new one and well 40 degree heat means that you know the heat sinks on laptops and the like can’t exactly ‘vent’ their heat that well.. This in turn causes a nice mess when you try and get on to play games or anything. it also means that durring the ‘day’ for the large part your not doing a lot.. instead waiting until night time to do the work.
However we did find 3 leaks inside yestarday when the storm hit
but then we are gonna replace all the roofing ‘nails’ with screws which should fix a bunch of those problems.. then after that is done, it’s a matter of starting to sand stuff back, looking at getting blocks and the like into place and all that fun stuff.. hopefully given some time we can make this place really sing again.
The house isn’t bad, more just.. worn down.. Time, Money and effort will fix that.. the problem of course is the ‘money’ side
